Genetics

What is the science behind GenoPalate?

We analyze over 100 genetic markers that influence how your body metabolizes different nutrients. We then combine your genetic results with research on nutritional genomics to determine your recommended intake level for carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. We base your recommendations on evidence-based research correlating your genetic variants with nutrition that’s shown positive health outcomes. We also provide insights on your sensitivity to lactose and gluten, and your metabolic rate of caffeine and alcohol.

How do you make the connection between my genes and nutrition recommendations?

GenoPalate uses curated evidence-based scientific literature to identify and validate gene-nutrition impactful relationships. GenoPalate further evaluates and scores the strength of these relationships in relation to metabolic health outcomes and uses our proprietary algorithm to link your DNA blueprint to nutrition recommendations that have been shown to benefit your specific genotype. We then match your nutrition recommendations with 100+ foods, allowing you to start eating for your genes!

What is a genotype?

You have two copies of each gene, one from your mom and one from your dad. Your genotype refers to the two nucleotides (A, C, G, or T) found at the same location on each copy of a gene.

What is the process of providing my DNA information?

We collect a saliva sample using a saliva swab to gather your DNA information. After purchasing, you will receive a kit with everything you need for the sample collection.

What happens to my DNA sample at the lab?

Our lab, which is certified by the Clinical Laboratory Information Amendment (CLIA), extracts the DNA from your saliva. Your DNA then goes onto what’s called a microarray. This array reveals your genotype for nutrition-related biomarkers, which we analyze in order to get your personal nutrition recommendations.

Nutrition

What nutritional insights will my DNA analysis provide me?

  • Optimize Your Nutrition - Discover your genetic-based needs for 23 different nutrients.

  • Uncover Sensitivities - See whether you may be sensitive to lactose or gluten and how fast your body processes alcohol and caffeine.

  • Better Manage Stress - Learn how your DNA may be affecting your mood and stress levels and find out how nutrition can help.

  • Tap Into Eating Predispositions - See if your DNA makes you more prone to snack, stress-eat, have certain cravings, prefer specific flavors, & more.

  • Find Your Genetic Superfoods - Unlock the 100+ foods that are a match for your DNA-based nutrient needs.

Can this report detect my food allergies?

GenoPalate does not provide recommendations for food allergies. DNA, on its own, is not the right biologic marker to assess food, or other allergies. Allergic reactions begin in your immune system and can be further influenced by numerous factors, including your environment. Currently, GenoPalate does take self-reported allergies into consideration during the onboarding process in order to provide you with the most accurate list of your “optimal foods” as possible. As the science continues to evolve, we hope to be able to provide more insight into the relationship between food allergies and genetics in the future.

I struggle with my weight, can GenoPalate help with this?

Because weight is influenced by a number of factors, GenoPalate cannot guarantee weight loss. We provide you with nutrition and food recommendations, based on your genes, to help you eat better for a healthier life.

I’m a diabetic, can I still use GenoPalate’s product?

While your GenoPalate recommendations are personalized based on many factors including your genes, age, gender, and food preferences, they are currently not influenced by current health conditions or modifications. While GenoPalate provides sound evidence-based foundational recommendations, other elements may need to be taken into account, such as any prescribed dietary plan, medications, supplements, and so forth. GenoPalate does not take the place of a medical exam or professional advice. We encourage you to incorporate GenoPalate’s nutrition DNA analysis along with recommendations from your healthcare team.

How come I can't see this report in the online web version?

With the powerful insights contained in our new EIR panel, we wanted to make them available as soon as possible. By making this report only available on mobile, we were able to share our knowledge faster. However, we know that not everyone has access to a smart mobile device. This is why our team is working diligently to also make them available on our web app soon.

What is the science behind this panel/What do I get?

This panel is based on evidence-based peer-reviewed research that demonstrates a strong association between certain genotypes and traits that are related to how an individual makes certain food choices or their predisposition to how they eat, including if they are likely to skip breakfast.

Are these results personalized to me?

Our expert-curated tips are based on your genes as well as the behavior you currently engage in. Understanding your eating habits can help you make more informed decisions and further personalize your diet.

What is the science behind this panel/What do I get?

Our Stress Insight Report includes five core domains that provide information regarding how your genes influence your reaction to certain stressful triggers such as major life events or social stressors. Additionally, you will gain more understanding of how your genes influence the relationship between sleep and stress levels and important pathways that may influence your overall stress levels. Based on these insights, our health care experts will also give you customized tips on how to optimize your diet or eating behaviors to reduce your overall levels of stress and reduce your risk of stress-related health problems.

Do genes influence your stress?

Genetic variations in your DNA, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) affect the hormones and enzymes responsible for your psychological and physical responses. Certain genetic variants are linked to an elevated response to stressful events or an impaired pathway dealing with stress- making some people more sensitive than others.

Will this help me lose weight or improve my overall health?

This may help you to make more informed decisions or certain modifications to your dietary habits, however, the current GenoPalate Insight Reports are not a weight loss program or other health intervention.

How do I schedule my 1-on-1 consultation?

After you purchase either our GenoJump or GenoGo program, you will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule your initial consultation via the Healthie app.

What can I expect to get out of my initial consultation?

During your first consultation with a GenoPalate Registered Dietitian, you’ll work together to analyze your test results and create actionable steps to tackle your personal health goals. Our RDs can go over your food list, hydration, exercise, and sleep goals so you don’t have to do it alone.

How long do I have to complete my 1-on-1 consultations?

You will have up to six months from date of purchase to schedule and complete your consultation(s).

Do I receive 1-on-1 consultations with my purchase of GenoJump or GenoGo?

Yes! When you purchase GenoJump, you will receive one 1-on-1 consultation with a GenoPalate dietitian to review your DNA results and discuss your goals. With GenoGo, you will receive four 1-on-1 consultations to discuss your DNA results, your goals and create an actionable plan to achieve it.

Does my GenoPalate order qualify for FSA/HSA reimbursement?

The IRS permits HSA/FSA accounts to reimburse "medical expenses" which generally include "amounts paid ... for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body." It has stated: "the term “diagnosis” encompasses the determination that a disease may or may not be present, and includes testing of changes to the function of the body that are unrelated to disease."

Based on this view, the IRS has informally ruled that genotyping (the process we use to identify and make recommendations for your best health) can be a "medical expense" where it "give[s] individuals a "deeper understanding of their health risks" and [encourages] individuals to provide the information to a healthcare provider for additional testing, diagnosis, or treatment."

How much of my GenoPalate purchase is FSA/HSA eligible?

Depending on your personal circumstances, some or all of the cost for your GenoPalate purchases may be reimbursable through your HSA/FSA account, although, we recommend you consult with your personal tax advisor before moving forward.

Do Dietitian Consultations or Personalized Supplements qualify for reimbursement?

The IRS treats dietitian services and supplements as medical expenses only in very limited circumstances. While we believe consultation with our dietitians and supplements add significant practical value to your test results, the services they provide will not qualify as "medical expense" for reimbursement purposes.

Can GenoPalate provide me an itemized receipt?

Yes. If your order confirmation email does not provide your provider enough information to reimbursement, you can email us at hello@genopalate.com with your order number and we'll be happy to generate an expanded receipt.

Can I use my FSA/HSA debit card?

Yes! Your FSA/HSA debit card can be used at checkout when purchasing our DNA Analysis and Collection Kits.
