Genetic Testing: Translating Research To Nutritional Solutions

There is absolutely no gray area when it comes to cilantro.

Based on your genes, you’ll either savor its unique flavor or you’ll do anything to get its soapy aftertaste off your palate.

But your genes rule much more than taste when it comes to food.

We know our food choices can either help or do harm. When “expert” advice is constantly changing, and new diets are trending, trying to figure what to eat can leave you feeling confused, frustrated and overwhelmed. And when we experience those feelings, the default response is to do nothing.

Thanks to the science of genetic testing and nutrition research, we’ve simplified personalized nutrition. We now know that in order to optimize our health, we need to eat the right foods for our bodies.

It’s simple: Your Genes + Nutritional Science = Your Foods.

When you start eating for your genes, and shut out the nutrition noise, you can equip your body with the vital nutrients you need. You’ll be better able to manage weight, and control or prevent chronic disease. You’ll also be able to protect your health and the health of your loved ones.

How nutritional genetic testing works

Genetic tests can be used to determine your ancestry, physical characteristics and personality traits. These tests can also detect if you carry DNA markers for genetic diseases and disorders such as breast cancer or cystic fibrosis.

Common genetic tests, like the ancestry kits you order online, measure your genotype for various biomarkers using a saliva sample. Your genotype refers to the two nucleotides (A, C, G, or T) found at the same location on each copy of a gene. Nucleotides form the basic structural unit of nucleic acids such as DNA.

GenoPalate’s lab, which is certified by the Clinical Laboratory Information Amendment (CLIA), uses this type of kit to collect saliva samples and perform what is called a “microarray” test. DNA microarrays are microscope slides that are printed with thousands of tiny spots in defined positions, with each spot containing a known DNA sequence or gene.

The DNA molecules attached to each spot act as probes—allowing only the corresponding single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs pronounced snips) from your DNA sample to bind to them. Each spot corresponds to a different SNP. SNPs map the locations of your DNA which tend to vary from person to person.

These locations determine appearance, disease susceptibility or response to drugs. They can also determine your personalized nutrition solution.

Each SNP GenoPalate analyzes is correlated to metabolic health outcomes and nutrition interventions. During this analysis, your data is completely de-identified and encrypted in our database. We carefully dispose of it after it has been used to generate your report.

Let’s look at two examples of what your test results might uncover:

The CYP2R1 gene helps convert vitamin D to a form your body can use (vitamin D3). Studies found that the GG genotype for a variant (SNP) within the CYP2R1 gene corresponds to an increased risk of vitamin D insufficiency. When your body doesn't get enough vitamin D, you increase your risk for diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. To reduce this risk, we may recommend that you increase your daily vitamin D intake.

The PPARG gene helps determine your response to fats and sugar. This indicates how your body stores fat and uses sugar. Studies found that the CC genotype for a variant within the PPARG gene corresponds to an increased risk for obesity if you’re on a high fat diet. To reduce this risk, we may recommend that you lower your fat intake.

We’ve researched hundreds of studies to compile insights like these into reports that are easy to understand—and use. We want our customers to be able to eat, and live, healthier.

Personalized nutrition science will work for you

GenoPalate analyzes 100+ SNPs. These small variants in your genes lead to drastic differences in the way your body metabolizes nutrients and absorbs certain vitamins and minerals.

This analysis of your genes will provide you with a roadmap for the foods and nutrients you should be consuming for optimal health.

Unlike other DNA tests on the market, we don’t stop at nutrition recommendations or potential sensitivities.

For those who don’t want to keep track of their exact nutrients, or for those who are struggling to get all the nutrients we recommend, we include a personalized food list.

We do this by comparing your gene-based nutrition profile to the nutrient profile of the thousands of foods in our food database. Each personalized list includes all major food groups broken down into 16 subcategories and over 85 foods that are the best fit for your body.

By combining your genotype results, nutrition recommendations and the nutrient composition of foods, you’ll know how to eat for your genes

This makes GenoPalate’s results practical, actionable and easy to use.
