Recently, America’s Poison Centers reported a troubling rise in Vitamin A toxicities. As childhood vaccination rates have ticked downward, localized measles outbreaks have resurfaced across several parts of the U.S. In response, corner-internet echo chambers and viral social media posts began aggressively pushing heavy Vitamin A supplementation as a DIY preventative measure.

While Vitamin A is used medically under strict clinical supervision to treat severe measles complications, the unregulated boom in self-prescribed megadoses has led to a spike in acute Vitamin A toxicity as a dangerous side effect.

This situation highlights a massive cultural blind spot. There is a widespread perception that dietary supplements are entirely benign (all upside, zero downside). Propelled by this myth, the supplement industry has exploded into a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut. The reality, however, is far more sobering. A massive portion of commercially available over-the-counter (OTC) supplements overstate their benefits, lack scientific backing, and treat highly unique individuals with a dangerous, blanket approach.

The Hidden Reality of Nutrient Deficiencies

To be clear, meeting our nutritional baselines is vital. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) establishes Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) designed to prevent chronic deficiency. While it is always ideal to harvest these nutrients from a diverse and balanced, whole-food diet, modern eating habits tell a different story.

The Standard American Diet (with the fitting SAD acronym) relies heavily on highly processed, ultra-convenient options that are systematically stripped of micronutrients.
